Soffits and Fascias: 3 Signs of Trouble

Roofs are built with several components that work together to effectively protect your home from the elements. Soffits are used to conceal the rafters of your home, allow for roof ventilation and give your home’s exterior better appeal. Fascias are parts of the roof that are on the edges, found exactly where the shingles end. They’re also to where your gutters are attached.

Here are three signs that indicate the need to have new soffits and fascia installed.

  1. Gutter Problems

Gutters are essential to the proper drainage of your roofing system, and they are typically attached to fascia boards. If your gutters are knocked askew or aren’t attached to the side of your roof anymore, your fascia boards may have issues and need to be replaced. Gutters are responsible for diverting rainwater, and that means your fascias are also constantly exposed to moisture. Wood rot can easily settle into older fascias and weaken the material.

  1. Ventilation Problems

Soffits assist in roof ventilation by allowing cold air to enter your attic space. Without functional soffits, you may feel warmer in your home because your roof isn’t venting out heat properly. More heat in your home means more strain on your air conditioner, and this will cause your electricity bills to increase. If your home is consuming more power and your attic space is hotter than it usually is, then you might want to have your soffits checked and replaced.

  1. Pest Problems in the Attic

If your attic is becoming a nest for pests like bugs and rodents, you definitely need to replace your soffits and fascias. These components are also responsible for barring animals from your roof. Pest problems typically happen during colder seasons when these uninvited guests are looking for places to keep themselves warm and safe.
